LGBTQ+ Counselling in Leeds Safe, Inclusive Therapy

Why choose LGBTQ+ Counselling in Leeds?

Whether you're exploring your identity, dealing with shame or rejection, or simply looking for a therapist who gets it, LGBTQ+ therapy offers a space where you don’t have to explain the basics.

I work with people across the LGBTQ+ community who:

  • feel stuck in their own head

  • overthink conversations or decisions

  • struggle with anxiety or self-doubt

  • feel pressure to keep it together

  • want therapy that is straightforward and honest.

Therapy for coming out, relationship challenges and self-esteem stress.

LGBTQ Counselling

People come to LGBTQ+ therapy for many different reasons — sometimes clear, sometimes harder to put into words. Some of the themes I often work with include:

🌈 Exploring identity — whether that’s around sexuality, gender, labels, or choosing not to label at all
🧠 Anxiety, low self-esteem, and feeling “not enough”
💔 Family rejection and experiences of homophobia, biphobia, or transphobia
🪞 Shame and challenging internalised beliefs about yourself
❤️‍🩹 Breakups, relationship challenges, and dating within LGBTQ+ contexts
🌪️ Loneliness, grief, and trauma

You don’t need to arrive with a tidy explanation for how you’re feeling — part of our work together can be understanding your experiences and finding ways to move forward that feel authentic to you.

How an LGBTQ+ counsellor can support you

Working with a gay therapist can offer deeper understanding of the cultural and social contexts that shape LGBTQ experiences. You won’t need to explain the basics of identity, coming out, or navigating discrimination.

This can help therapy feel more efficient and less guarded, allowing you to focus on what’s most important to you. It also creates space to explore your personal story without fear of misunderstanding or judgement.

That doesn't mean therapy will be easy or comfortable all the time — but it will be real, safe, and respectful of who you are.

🏳️‍🌈 LGBTQ Therapy – FAQs

1. What makes LGBTQ-affirmative counselling different?
LGBTQ therapy provides a safe, inclusive space where your identity is respected and understood. It explores challenges like coming out, relationships, minority stress, and self-acceptance. For some client’s it is as simple as knowing that you are not judged and that your experiences are unique.

2. How can therapy help with internalised homophobia or shame?
Counselling helps you notice and challenge negative beliefs learned from society, family, or past experiences. Therapy supports building self-worth, confidence, and pride in your identity.

3. Is LGBTQ counselling only for sexuality and gender issues?
Not at all. LGBTQ clients also seek therapy for anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, and relationships. The difference is you won’t have to explain or defend your identity while doing so.

4. Can online LGBTQ therapy work if I’m not “out” yet?
Yes. Online sessions are confidential, and you control how much you share. Therapy can provide a safe place to explore identity and consider what “coming out” might mean for you.

5. How do I choose the right LGBTQ therapist?
Look for a counsellor with experience in LGBTQ issues, empathy, and a non-judgemental approach. A first consultation is a good chance to check if you feel comfortable and understood.
